Security on the Internet of Things (IoT)

by Brent Kirkpatrick

(Date Published: .)

IoT is secure when the administrator to computer ratio is favorable.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is challenging because of the sheer number of computers compared to the number of administrators. The explosion in the number of computers attached to the Internet has outpaced the number of administrators required to maintain security.

Suppose that one good administrator can keep 100 computers secure. Then the roughly 6 billion devices on the Internet require 60 million good administrators. Since the world population is roughly 7.6 billion, this means every 100th person would be an administrator. If the U.S. were to field all the administrators, every 5th person would be an administrator. We are woefully under-prepared to maintain the security of this many devices.

The economy is demanding that computer security become more efficient. This way, one good administrator will be able to maintain 1,000-10,000 computers. A very very good computer systems person would be able to maintain 100,000 computers.

We may have hit a limiting factor to the size of the Internet. Or, perhaps the science will improve to deliver the necessary security.
