Coordinated Cyberattacks Driven by IoT

by Brent Kirkpatrick

(Date Published: .)

This last week has seen worms, DDoS attacks and network outages likely driven by an IoT botnet.

The Boston Globe was hit with two days of DDoS attacks, on Nov. 8 and 9. Their web site and internal servers were targets. Thousands of computers were commandeered in a bot-net and were used to send a flood of packets to the targets.

There was a major network outage on Monday, Nov 6. This day marks the anniversary of the Dyn DDoS attack, Nov. 6, 2016. Some parties on Twitter are calling the recent outages a major DDoS attack on the U.S. during which azure, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook all went down. Comcast took credit for a network outage on the same day that they said was due to a configuration error.

Intrepid Net Computing has observed what appears to be a worm in Firefox. Perhaps this worm was used to create an IoT bot-net used to generate these DDoS attacks. Please restart your computers and browsers at irregular intervals to clear out dynamic memory.
